Congrats Shirley. I have in no way completely conquered my fear, but lesson by lesson, one gait at a time, I shall succeed, I refuse to let fear rule my life. My horse is my partner, on the ground or on his/her back. I hope to be able to compete with my Galicenos some day to bring awareness to the breed and I have a wonderful instructor that is also a friend and helps me succeed.

Kate Green, Having had my own major challenges with fear while riding I can relate to your joy with finding some success with overcoming your fear and hanging in there to be able to ride with more confidence. Congratulations on hanging in there.

I am thrilled with finding someone that has been able to help me too. It's been a long hard time but worth it to be able to enjoy my horse from his back. I was still able to enjoy him from the ground and have learned how to do many trick type things with him so there has been no lack of time together but I'm happy to be able to think we may get back to riding down the lane and then hopefully out on some trails together. No hurry as long as we keep enjoying each other.
Enjoy!!!!

I have had a few lesson now and I can tell you, it is inmeasurable what a difference a well trained horse and instructor can do for your confidence, skill, and safety. I have progressed from the walk to the trot and am riding multiple laps without stirrups in the trot. For me this is a major feat since I fell at the tot 2 yrs ago.

After a month of from lessons due to vacations and finances, I took a lesson last night and picked up where I left off. Our last lesson was the first that included reins. During that lesson I attempted trotting Melinda on my own and she ran off with me for a bit. When she headed for the barn I panicked for a moment before I retook control.  Yesterday I rode using the reins the whole time and did lots of trotting. I have yet to move on to canter/lope due to wanting my confidence stronger first, but it was an awesome lesson that built a strong foundation in confidence.

Happy New Year to all riders, rusty or otherwise!

Hey Cindy, just read your comment about aches etc., have a few of those myself. BUT, lately I have had some improvement by adding a substantial amount of magnesium to my usual Vitamin D and C routine (I get lots of calcium in Dairy). The mag has helped relax my muscles (I was seizing up even shortly after doing my stretces), my brain (sleeping better, feeling less frazzled, less brain fog now that I sleep at nigt). Can't see a downside, except that I have to take it every day, two or three tablets spread out over the day. Anyway it can't hurt, and I would recommend anyone try it for aches and pains. ibuprofen and tylenol just weren't cutting it, but I only take the occasional tylenol now.

They are good physical and emotional therapy, even in the simplest of exchanges with them.

I hate this time of year when I get a bout of pain that just won't quit. I know it's because I'm not active, 3 feet of snow everywhere, no indoor arena, blah, blah, blah. As you can tell I have the "blahs" lolol.  Seriously, I'm only 61yrs. and in very good health according to all my tests recently.  I literally feel like I'm seizing up until I get with the horses feeding them, smooching with them, buring my face in their fuzzy coats, then the pain all goes away. Until I go back inside and do whatever, then the pain comes back.

I did look very carefully at her mare.  She was a BIG girl! The top of her back was over my head!  I'd be lyin if I didn't admit that her sheer size intimidated me just a bit.  She did prove to be a very quiet horse though.  Don't get me wrong. She moves out quick when asked.  No old plug. Just well trained and accustomed to being a lesson horse.

I shall. We are working on scheduling another lesson, but with us both working retail, it isn't easy this time of the year.

Kate, Sounds like your first lesson was a big success. Glad you are feeling good about it. That's a big part of the learning....our attitude.

Keep us informed!
