El Dorado

This is El Dorado, winter of 2011. He was almost 20 yrs old when this pic was taken. He is a Galiceno gelding and his dam is a full sister to Rosalita and El Cacahuatito.

Comment by Kate Green on December 1, 2011 at 1:11am: You know, snow is rather rare here in north central Texas. Its usually ice, freezing rain, or drizzle. We had blizzard like conditions the last two years running. Last year it snowed 3 days in a row and it was so pretty the way it was drifting down. Keeping the rarity of snow in mind, I should have had someone video when I went into the back pasture to feed. We put in hay then set out to call the horses up. All but two came up together. They ran by us (we had already started down the hill) with the icicles jingling on their bellies. Then we pushed on to find the missing horses, a gelding and a yearling. We found the gelding just before we reached the creek ( over halfway across a 40 acre pasture) and while trying to reach him to make sure he was okay, I stepped over a hill without a thought and fell in a snow drift. This was a mere 8 weeks after my fall and I was barely walking. We carefully crossed the creek and kept searching. After traveling around the whole pasture we found the yearling up with the herd at the hay bale. We put out grain and left as soon as they finished it. Our horses ive in a semi wild condition. No barn and living as a natural herd minus the stallion. They have healthy, normal relationships with one another and I learn alot from watching them interact.

I am an amateur photographer and an artist. This image spoke to me in a way most people wouldn't understand. It just made my heart sing!! I was even shocked it turned out so well!

Comment by Kate Green on November 29, 2011 at 1:00am: He's a spoiled boy already! He doesn't get many treats, but he does love them. He has been retired since he was three. I have been trying to ease him back into being ridden and I love that blaze face of his. He has more red in his coat than others and I like the blue eye. It really stands out. The fact that this pic is your screensaver is a great compliment both for me and for him. Thank you.

Comment by Shirley on November 28, 2011 at 12:26pm: Oh yes! I generally do not like different colored eyes. BUT...It is perfect for ElDorado. Love it! I have his snowy picture up as my screen saver. He's amazing! With that expression I would probably spool him rotten with treats! He he! I do treat but know better then to overdo.

Comment by Kate Green on November 28, 2011 at 11:36am: Thank you Erika. That boy is our most photogenic. I caught him that morning last year during a major snow storm . We rarely get snow. It's usually all ice. While I was out taking pics, he was hoping for his breakfast. You could almost see the question on his face....Are you gonna feed me, Momma? I'm hungry.

Comment by Kate Green on November 26, 2011 at 8:27pm: They are very rare. More so today than 20 yrs ago. If we don't draw attention to this breed now, we may lose them forever. The wild purebred herds are no more. With the people of Mexico more mobile today and a thriving equine based tourist trade, they have cross bred them to being no more than a type of spanish mustangs. The pure Galicenos are in North America. These horses are prized for their size, heart, and easy going way. The have a gait just like a TWH. The do a running walk.They are a fun breed to work with as most are highly intelligent and enjoy learning new things.
