I've loved horses my whole life but didn't get the pony I'd asked for from the time I was 3 until I was 52. Here's how it happened. In 2003 I was in a wreck with a drunk driver and had my right foot completely destroyed. In 2010, despite multiple surgeries and countless hours of PT I could only walk about 100' with crutches. For any distance at all, I used a wheelchair or scooter. My PT recommended therapeutic horseback riding as an activity for me and I got a one group lesson a week slot at Horses for Hope in the spring of 2010. Within 6 weeks people were noticing a difference in my balance and gait. I made miraculous progress and 3 months later I was able to walk around the block with crutches. A year later I could walk well enough with 1 crutch that I was able to begin leading horses for therapeutic riding! Then in April 2011, I got my first horse, a Paso Fino mare named Macey. She has been taking care of me ever since. We do lots of trail riding and enjoy obstacle courses. Unfortunately, she now has Cushings and is slowing down so some of the longer trails are becoming difficult for her. So in April 2018, a Paso Fino gelding named Capri came to live with us. We are currently getting to know each other but it looks like he's going to be a great partner too!
