I'm a widely published, critically acclaimed writer, often covering the desert West. My new book is "Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West," a ten years-in-the-making book about the wild horse on this continent, from prehistory to its plight today. It includes chapters about Cortes and the 16 horses that launched the conquest, Comanche, the horse that survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Wild Horse Annie, without whom there would be no wild horses or burros in America, and Bugz, the survivor of the 1998 Christmas massacre of 34 wild horses outside Reno. "Mustang" has gotten great reviews from the Atlantic Monthly to Penthouse to the Natural Horse, and has jacket quotes from Michael Blake ("Dances with Wolves"), John Fusco ("Hidalgo"), and Samantha Dunn ("Not by Accident"). I grew up around horses, riding since I was a little girl, and my mother was one of the first women to ride professionally on the racetrack, as an exercise boy.
