As a teenager I owned a wonderful gelding named Dobs. He and I spent many wonderful days riding trails and enjoying each other's company. He was my companion and friend. Alas he was replaced by my first husband. Not a good choice but at the time it seemed to be.
30 years, 2 sons, 3 husbands and a lifetime later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. At 46 years old I faced my own mortality. Life suddenly seemed too precious to waste. The next spring I got involved as a volunteer at a theraputic riding stable. I realized that I had not lost my love of horses and my dreams of owning another horse became a quest.
Fortunately I was able to support that dream financially and my current husband had no objections.
In Oct. of 06 I bought Freckles, a 17 year old arabian cross mare. A gentle soul with a bit of a stubborn streak. I have learned that I know more than I thought I did about horses and that I know a lot less than I need to know. I've rediscovered that the rest of the world, the pressures of career, family and health all melt away whenever I am in Freckles presence!!!
I wanted to share this peace that I had found with my husband
so I bought Annie, a 13 year old paint mare, for him Christmas 2006. She is a little more antsy than Freckles and requires a calm no nonsense approach. Again a learning experience for both of us!
It is now 5 years later and Russ does not ride. My daughter-in-law, Renee' does.
Renee' has developed a good relationship with Freckles and I have a true friend in Annie.
