Why Not?

Why not?

Posted November 19, 2009

I think my horses often think "Why not?"

"Why not" walk through that electric fence to munch on the neighbors alfalfa field?

[Thank you to my neighbor for running over to tell me they are out.]

"Why not" nudge that stall door and see if the "maid" forgot to latch it again?

[Thanks to my husband for cleaning up the hay bales they tore through… Continue

Are Horses Bold?

Are horses bold? What is the difference between bold and bolt? I think my horses, when frightened, bolt with boldness.

When I picture a bold horse a cross country eventing horse comes to mind. They bound over huge jumps and gallop off. How did they become bold?

What bold horses do you know? What makes them… Continue

Inexperienced?

This painting seemed like the perfect illustration for the Oscar Wilde quote: "Experience is one thing you can't get for nothing." That quote applies to humans and horses!

Where do you see beauty?

"The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone." This Johann Wolfgang von Goethe quote is one with which I, as an artist, can really relate. Every artist whose sets out to paint something beautiful needs to take their own path. And the results are not always what others consider beautiful.

Here's an example of how everyone's taste for beauty varies. At my exhibit of the "Beautiful Horses of Michigan" paintings in March, I asked… Continue

Forward Motion

Forward movement, in equestrian lingo, is something to strive for.

Forward movement, in mental thoughts, .... something to think about.

What do you think about this Henry David Thoreau quote, "Never look back unless you are planning to go that way."

A Fantasy Horse and a Fantasy Quote

This Friesian, Ares, seemed like a fairy tale horse, with his beautiful flowing mane and tail and dreamy movement. And in this painting, he seems to delicately step through a pastel fantasy world. That's why I paired it with a quote from Lewis Carroll, who is best known for his fantasy writing of "Alice in Wonderland."

Gutter Talk

If you ever feel like you're in the gutter, this Oscar Wilde quote is for you!

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

Look up, and tell me what you see.

Contemplation

Contemplation, sometimes a good thing, sometimes a bad thing.

Will Roger's quote, "Don't let yesterday use up too much of today," is a good one for those of us who sometimes let our minds dwell on the past.

If that's the case for you - or someone you know - feel free to click on the link below and print out a copy of this painting/quote combo. Maybe it will help you adjust your focus.…

A Cat Painting!

This week's quote/painting combo has my only painting with a cat! It's accompanied by an all too true quote from Will Rogers, "Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier 'n puttin' it back in."

That goes for puttin' cats back in those little pet carriers too!

Work worth doing . . .

Do you agree with Theodore Roosevelt's quote, "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."

Once I read a report of a worker who volunteered at a nonprofit organization who lamented over the fact that his day job was mundane. The nonprofit organization's leader pointed out that the worker's gains from his day job allowed him to make considerable contributions to the nonprofit… Continue

Stride Onward

Here's another Will Rogers quote, "The best way out of a difficulty is through it." This Frieisan stallion, Minske, with his powerful stride, seems able to go through anything!

The Right Thing

This painting is of Nanning, a Friesian stallion with such stature, he stands out in a crowd -- even a crowd of Friesians!

Friesians seem to be such willing horses, always willing to do the right thing. Not all horses are like that (and probably not all Friesians are really like that either!), but after having just read Mark Rashid's new book, Whole Horse, Whole… Continue

Have you ever gotten run over?

This week's quote from Will Rogers: "Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." makes me think of a time when I got run over.

My horses ran over me once -- of course it was my fault. I was desensitizing them to an umbrella. They were all at one end of their small outdoor pen and I was about eight feet away from them, opening and closing an umbrella. Of the four horses, I knew one (Ollie) was not… Continue
