10 Tips to a Healthier You, Tip 10

Know Your Weaknesses – most people have sweet or salty tooth with foods
they just can’t live without. I love pumpkin pie fudge, salt & vinegar
chips, and the occasional chocolate. Having indulges once in a while is
okay – you don’t want to deprive yourself and then end up gorging weeks
later. Instead try to give yourself small portions. For me, I buy the single
serving Lindt chocolates (Lindt chocolate has 0g trans fat), as well as
the Kit Kat singles (has no trans fat). When I am feeling the need for a
sweet pick up I go get myself a single piece and enjoy it after I’ve had a
fruit or vegetable and a glass of water. The fruit/veggie and water helps
to fill me up so I won’t go sneaking back for another piece, and the
keeping the single serving sized chocolates helps me to keep control over
my servings. It is much harder to resist the Kit Kat bar if it is a whole bar,
already opened, and just waiting for me to eat the rest – but if I have
individually wrapped singles I am much more likely to be able to just
enjoy by single serving without temptation to finish off the already
opened chocolate bar. For my chips, I like to pour a few into a small bowl
and I actually count out the serving to make sure I don’t overeat. I was
able to find a salt and vinegar chip brand that has no trans fat, no
preservatives, and tastes great – Kettle Chips. Letting myself have my
treats helps me to avoid indulging later, but keeping the serving size in
check leaves me guilt free afterward.

Especially with the holiday season - plan ahead and have some smaller serving sized treats available, drink water and have a fruit/veggie before you start savouring some Christmas delights.
