Jobs with horses. It doesn't always mean scooping poop! :)

At www.HorseJobs.ca we have many people ask us about how they can progress in the equine industry or they are looking for ways to get back to doing what they really love....working with horses.

Like many of you, I started as a child, mucking stalls in return for a riding lessons or to pay off a lease on a riding school pony. Later I was mucking stalls to help pay for the stabling of our pony and so the barter system goes... Also like many of you, I left the stable yard for a "REAL JOB"

I came back into the equine field almost by accident and I couldn't be happier! I have a background in Hotels and Hospitality. I used to specialise in recruiting, training and staffing for the Hospitality and Special Event industry. I have been fortunate to find a way to put my corporate training into good use within the field that has always been previously thought of as "just a hobby". It's the best of both worlds if you ask me.

YOU CAN DO IT TOO!
It's really not has hard as you think it might be..but be prepared, many privately owned barns may not offer you a retirement plan, paid vacation and personal leave as the "corporate world" offers. So, before taking the plunge, you really must weigh up the pros and cons and think seriously about the consequences of your actions.

On the other hand..I can think of several jobs that are equine related and still offer that "real job" feel. Take for example a positon in Equine Related Insurance...Just ask Mike from InterCity Insurance and the staff of their affiliate company, Capri Insurance. Mike tells me that finding qualified insurance professionals is relatively easy, BUT, finding those who know and understand the equine industry and it's people...well, that's a different story altogether. (And let's face it, us horsey folk are a different kind of person altogether aren't we?- it takes one to know one..right?)

Anyway. Back to the point of my story...See? I told you.."real jobs" DO exist in the horse world! You don't have to muck stalls to work with horses.

Don't believe me?
Need more proof? OK!

Who do you think runs our provincial equine associations? Someone (a horsey someone) has to manage the membership, marketing, sales and sponsorship, accounting, clerical and management of these wonderful organisations.
Many large barns and show facilities also offer "real jobs" such as sales and marketing, office manager, show manager etc -all of which can lead to a GM position once you have the experience under your belt.
Did I mention Retail or Manufacturing?
If you have a retail background and want to work in the horsey circuit again..take some time to think about the amount of retail stores and facilities that exist in order to support our ever growing equine industry. We couldn't saddle up without a saddle, or go to horse shows without transportation.

So don't dispair horse lovers! There is a job out there that is PERFECT for you...and YOU are just right for the right employer too!

Our hope is that WWW.HORSEJOBS.CA will continue to act as a portal for those qualified horse people out there and the hundeds of equine related jobs that exist in Canada (and around the world)
So, log on, keep your eyes and ears open. These jobs are out there and one of them is just right for you.
