Well, it has been pretty eventful working with Sky.

Monday, we went on our weekly trail ride.

The kayaks were going to eat her, she was convinced of this. She's a very smart horse and she kept having to look back to make sure they either weren't there or weren't following her.

We did some hills, some galloping, some cantering, trotting, and all and all, had a great ride.

But the highlight of our ride....

We jumped for our first time.

Sky is on the trail what I want her to be in the arena. She's so much more attentive, listens to aids, and has a better carriage on the trail. I don't know if maybe she's arena sour, or maybe because of her training she's been beaten into a certain mindset in the arena. I don't know.

But yes, we jumped. It was a small...maybe 18" log on the trail. We jumped it three times and she was so very good.

Tonight, I rode her in the arena. At the beginning, she was wonderful. Calm, collected, going in a straight line, listening to my aids. But then she started to fall apart. We got back into a rhythm, and I had Jeremy (husband) set up a small crossrail. We had to walk over it a couple times because it was VURY SCURY. But in the end, we jumped it, and we jumped it well.

I can't get her to canter in the arena without arching her back and bucking. On the trail, her transition is beautiful. I just don't get it.

She also needs an improvement on ground manners.

So, my plan is, aside from the trail riding, for about a month, I'm going to work her completely on the lunge. Side reins and all. I want her to learn how to bend. It seems her trainer forgot about this.

But I'm thinking she's going to be a great eventer. Since I've never competed in eventing, It will be a new experience for me as well.

Problem is, Sacramento has very few trainers when it comes to this.

Well, I'm tired and sweaty. Enjoying a nice cool one.

Wow, Heather - thanks for sharing this fabulous ride. And your first jump! How exciting!

How long have you had Sky? How old is Sky? I ride western and know nothing about eventing but good for you to try something so - how shall I put it? - athletic? gutsy? Good to know that Sky is willing to jump - a good start for sure!

And, yep, at the end of the ride, enjoying a nice cool one, I am so with you on that one!

Happy trails!

;)
