Cracking the code, with my fabulous trainer's expertise, of course!

After my last session with my trainer, I felt a little disappointed with my jumping and my inability to bring Kingston's pace under control. I know not to give the guy something to lean against, but I honestly thought I provided enough release to prevent it from happening.

Yesterday, we rode outside and there are no walls to use as aids in slowing him down. We trotted over a low fence, then, we moved up to cantering over the fence, then halting. Not bad. Then my trainer decided we, or I, should do an in and out.

My first thought? "Are you serious?" He was.

The first time, Kingston chipped in, rather than doing and true in and out. I halted, we went again. The second time cantering away. Again, Kingston just went all Kentucky Derby on me. Circled him, got him to back off. I decided to ask my trainer what tool in the tool box would he use. And he told me what he would do, and I said "Okay. Let me try that". Well, ask and you shall receive.

I did another in and out; need more pace and impulsion...still chipping in, but, this time I applied my new tool, and guess what? THAT was the ticket. I was able to bring Kingston back on his haunches, and keep the pace manageable.

Last in and out...is my pace good? Check. Is my line good? Better. Over and...out! Lean back, sit in, right leg, left rein, look right, lead change, and canter in a big circle, downward transition into the trot. And then I heard one word from my trainer:

"Beautiful".

I owe all of this to my trainer, Eric. He's got younger kids, who are far better riders, but he has been so incredibly patient with me. Folks, when you have a great trainer, hold on to him or her. And to the trainers out there; thank you for all you do, and endure!
