If there’s one thing that every barn has plenty of, it’s baling twine. So what do you do with all of this leftover twine, aside from throwing it in the trash? Here are some creative ways to use old baling twine.

Braid a Grooming Wisp

Group a handful of baling twine together into a grooming wisp to help bring the shine out in your horse’s coat. You can either add more twine to the wisp as it wears out, or, since baling twine tends to accumulate, just create a new one.

Tie a Ball for Bucket Cleaning

Wrap twine strands up together into a ball and tie a strand of twine around the ball to keep it tight. Use the ball as a scouring pad when cleaning out water buckets, troughs, or automatic waterers. You can also use this twine ball to clean bits after a ride.

Create a Hay Net

Strands of baling twine can be tied together to make a hay net. Tie the twine together in a grid, with horizontal lines crossing through vertical lines. Knot each intersection of twine together, then tie loops in the end of each strand and run a single strand of twine through the loops to create the hay net’s drawstring.

Use as Breakaway Ties

Baling twine makes a great safety loop for a breakaway tie. Tie a loop of baling twine to the hitching ring that you will be using, then clip the crosstie or lead rope to the baling twine. If a horse pulls back with force, the baling twine will give way, preventing serious injury that could occur if your horse panicked while tied to a solid wall or post.

Braid a Rug

Need a rug to scrape the mud off your boots before you enter the tack room or barn lounge? Baling twine’s rough surface is perfect for the task, and old strands of baling twine can be easily woven into a mud-scraping rug so that you can save time on sweeping later.

Get Crafty

The crafts that you can make with baling twine are endless, especially if you have the natural earth-toned twine as opposed to the neon colored plastic twine. Wrap twine around old horseshoes and hang them as decorations, or tie twine tightly around empty glass bottles, mason jars, or vases to add horse-themed décor to your house.

There are tons of great ways that you can put old strands of baling twine to good use. What creative uses for baling twine have you come up with?
