I would like to start off by saying that I am not a "DQ" (completely)....I am though very strict on my training and horse management as thats how I was trained by some of the best in the World. Coming from a family of Dressage riders and competitors, I am really amazed at how the Dressage community in my area demonstrates 1.sportsmanship 2. horse care 3. training 4. barn etiquette.

1. Sportsmanship - I have seen some really nasty attitudes, not only for the judges but with each other. They comment on the other horses, the weight of the rider, tests and overall head to toe turn out of the person (s).

I feel that if someone has something to say, instead of attacking the person, why not help and assist. This will keep all happy and going forward in positive way for the sport (any discipline)

2. Horse care - Most horses are either wayyyyyyy over weight or wayyyy to thin. I seems to be that the barns they board at are not managing this effectively. And when they are questioned about the body of the horse, the owners have no idea and really have some "Owner Blindness" going on.

3. Training - I recently had two people come to my barn, I usually dont have other people board but I wanted to really see them excel. Between the two, they have been riding 6-10 yrs and both were in full training with their horses before coming to me. I am shocked at how their previous trainers have kept them (what I call) stupid, just another way of how people in the "know" just keep the money coming and people stalled in one spot. They can't wrap a leg, lunge, tack, post and understand the simplest of lessons.

4. training- same as above with the addition of - abuse some people are using to get results. WOW and p.s. no one says a word ( i do)

5. Barn eitquette - No respect for their tack, cleanliness, language or the professionalism that is to be displayed at all costs at home or shows. Proper turn out is a must during all riding times, to me this shows the respect that one has for the discipline as well as their horse and the time spent schooling at any level.

Thanks -

Hello - slc2
I dont believe my post violates my every point, I was in fact stating some of the issues that occur more than not. I have to write it to explain my opinion, I guess in my closing should have been more to the point of support and enjoying the sport (any). I do not have customers as I would never hang a dressage trainer sign for the fact of making a dollar. The two I mentioned in my barn - stay there board free, lesson free - ( they can no longer afford boarding due to the economic crisis and were in risk of losing their horses) and we work together at an enjoyable pace, we discussed all the points in my blog and they dont agree on all of it. Their common response was they wanted consistancey (no matter the process) and to learn as well as progress. I do agree, everyone is different in their methods and ideas.

Did you read my mind on the barn etiquette? I don't understand the drama that afflicts many barns - Bad discipline to say the least. Extremely demoralizing. And the silly way some riders dress - horses don't care about cleavage, makeup, or unususal piercings after all.
