Behind-The-Scenes Q&A with Dressage Olympian Ashley Holzer

Red Scarf Equestrian presents a behind-the-scenes Q&A with Olympian Ashley Holzer

1. How do they organize all the athletes before they march into the stadium? What is everyone doing?

Unfortunately we were not able to attend the opening ceremonies in Beijing as our events were held a plane ride away in Hong Kong. I was very sad to have not participated in them. I was worried about travelling so close to my competiton time. There had been typhoons in Hong Kong and the last thing I wanted to happen was to have that delay my return. In the past two Olympics that I attended, (Seoul and Athens) the opening ceremonies were a huge highlight. I had never imagined that walking into the stadium to loud cheering would be so emotional, but it was.

Before you walk into the stadium the athletes are gathered in a big stadium where you wait until it is your turn. It is a long process and frankly a little boring to have to sit and wait for sometimes hours but it is so worth it!!!

I remember stepping into the stadium of the opening ceremonies at Seoul. I can still feel that rush of emotion as if it was yesterday. It was incredible.

2. What were your emotions walking into the stadium? Do you have any unusual memories about that moment?

I think it is so emotional because you work so hard to get there and you realize as you walk in that you have done it. What you focused on for so many years is actually happening. Your dream is coming true.

3. What are the athlete accommodations like?

In Hong Kong they had taken over a nearby hotel to house the athletes. It was lovely.

4. What did you do with your time when you were not riding or actually competing?

In Hong Kong there was so much to do. I had my family with me so we did all the sightseeing venues. Jacquie and I also did a lot of running in the area and it was fun to see it on foot. I have to admit that shopping was part of our daily agenda!! We saw all the markets and the Chinese have perfected the ability to make shopping malls the biggest things you have ever seen. Did I mention the custom tailors!! Many riders were out getting measured for Tails at a fraction of the normal cost! The chinese tailors would custom measure you and have the Tails ready in a few days.

I think the whole entire US Team got decked out!

5. What were you thinking just before you entered the ring?

Oh.... I hope today's a good day!!!!
