Equine Canada and University of Guelph create a partnership to benefit students

Equine Canada Enters Into Dynamic Partnership with University of Guelph
August 4, 2009 - Equine Canada is very pleased to announce its new partnership with the University of Guelph Kemptville Campus (UGKC) during the upcoming fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters.

This unique collaboration will provide an educational opportunity to equine students at the UGKC by developing course material that provides insight and practical applications in areas such as athlete selection and preparation, marketing, communications and components involved in the lead-up and execution of an international equestrian competition.

In turn, the students will work with the marketing and communications department of Equine Canada to assist in building public awareness of Equine Canada, the Canadian Equestrian Team and the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Lexington, Kentucky in September 2010.

“Kemptville Campus is delighted to be a partner with Equine Canada in this amazing opportunity for our students to be intimately involved in all aspects of preparation for an international event. With our entire academic year themed around WEG, students will study issues ranging from conditioning the equine athlete to handling traffic at the event site,” said Katrina Merkies, University of Guelph Kemptville Campus BBRM Equine Degree Program coordinator. “The opportunity to have direct interaction with Equine Canada and subsequently with the athletes and the general public will raise awareness of Equine Canada's role in equine sport, and spark student interest in the myriad of career options in the equine industry.”

Each course offered in the equine programs at UGKC—certificate, diploma, degree—will have an aspect of WEG incorporated into its curriculum. The primary course that will be impacted is Equine Event Management. The entire curriculum of this course will revolve around WEG.

In addition, the students will gain valuable experience while assisting with the hosting of the Equine Canada’s tradeshow booth during events such as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and WEG, and they will create articles, blogs and website content for use in various media mediums.
