When I went out this morning, Pickles made that encouraging hungry horsey sound and seemed happier than she did yesterday.

There is a look that horses get in their eyes that tells you what they’re thinking. Sometimes it's easier to read than others. But Pickles is an honest horse and I think she knows she's safe now.

We trimmed her mane last night and put some moisturizer on her feet. She is still walking a little sticky this morning and I'm debating whether or not I want to give her a little bute to see if it eases her discomfort with her feet. But I'm going to hold off on that for a day or two while I watch and get to know her better.

There is a lot behind her eyes. She was a beautiful horse when she was racing and I am familiar with her bloodlines - which include some pretty famous horses. Her granddaddy's were What a Pleasure on top & Arts & Letters on the bottom. (that's horse-people talk for father and mother's side- just in case whoever reads this is unfamiliar with the terms)

Anyway, Pickles was bred to be more than ordinary and I could tell the first time I saw her, she had a big heart. Maybe that's why I couldn't say no to taking her in.

I'm going to try to get some pictures up here. It's always nice to see where they start and how they improve with good care and lots of attention. I'm still not positive how much damage has already been done. She was neglected for quite a few years. From what I've been told, the last two were the worst.

I'll be posting updates for those interested in following her progress. So far we haven't raised any money but maybe we'll get lucky. I live in the back pasture on my sisters farm and she hasn't even seen Pickles yet. This is good because she will freak the minute she sees another mouth to feed. I'm pretty sure she would be just as happy as Pickles last owner was to let her starve, which is why I put up the donation webpage. Pickles will be eating about $200 a month.

A website has been set up for donations.
