Somehow the seasons have already run through from spring to summer to autumn, and now winter is just around the corner. It has crept up on us more quickly than it seems possible - Christmas is suddenly the next big celebration on the calendar! As a horse rider this means it is high time to get prepared for the coldest season as it is important to take extra care at this time of year.

Follow some of the hints and tips listed below so you can be sure that you are ready to deal with the elements each and every day...

Buy warmer boots

It’s horrible when your toes start to freeze when you are riding or working in the yard, so see whether you can get your hands on a warmer pair of boots to keep them toasty. There are some Mark Todd winter boots that could be an ideal choice; they are full length and lined with fleece for extra cosiness and comfort. For practicality they have a rubber grip sole so you don’t slip on the ground or stirrups. This type of style might be much more preferable in the winter as opposed to a basic pair of Jodhpur boots.

Use hi-vis clothing and accessories

You will also want to stay as safe as possible when you are riding next to the road, and in the winter it will be extremely dark when doing so in the early morning or late afternoon. That is why it is a sensible choice to invest in some authentic hi-vis items such as clothes or accessories. Buy your pieces from a respected and well-trusted retailer so you can be sure that they will have the legally required amount of reflectivity. You’ll find all sorts from jackets to saddle pads, and you could also buy a helmet torch to give you a bit more visibility on the road.

Rely on waterproofs

It can be quite exhilarating riding in the snow or the rain, until the precipitation starts to soak through your clothes. Perhaps you should try and find some waterproof items that will keep the elements away from your skin; that way you will be able to enjoy yourself for much longer without needing to retreat indoors. One suggestion is buying a pair of fleeced lined chaps, which would be worn on top of your jodhpurs (Rambo make sizes for both children and adults) - these give you an extra waterproof and breathable layer. A Velcro strap on the ankle also makes it easier to keep the heat in and the rain out.

Keep your horse warm

Once you have dressed yourself, don’t forget about your horse too. There are plenty of horse rugs, sheets and fleeces that you could buy to provide a little extra protection whether in the stables or outdoors in the paddock. Many are versatile and can also be used for the cooling down period after exercise so your horse stays fit and well.
