How to Build Your Barn to Maximize Your Convenience

Your barn's design can make your day-to-day chores faster and much more convenient, but it’s important that you consider this when you're planning out your barn. Here are some features that you’ll want to include in your barn to maximize its convenience.

Create Wide Barn Aisles

Wide barn aisles are not only convenient, they're also safer than narrow aisles. Wide barn aisles allow you to easily navigate them with horses, wheelbarrows, and equipment. If the aisle is made wide enough, then you can also access the barn’s interior with a vehicle for easy loading and unloading of supplies and equipment.

Position the Feed Room for Deliveries

When you’re planning out your feed room’s location, remember to account for access during feed deliveries. Positioning the room so that it’s easily accessible by a truck can make feed deliveries both faster and easier.

Position Feed and Tack Rooms for Convenience

It's also important to consider overall convenience when planning the location of your feed and tack rooms. Placing them in central locations makes them easier to access, reducing your time during chores. Consider locating the tack room so that it's close to your grooming stalls. If you have a large barn, then two feed rooms or two tack rooms may be a more convenient option.

Install Back Doors to Stalls

If your barn will be oriented so that the pastures back up to the stalls, then consider installing back doors in the stalls which open out onto the pastures. This system can dramatically cut down your time in turning out horses each morning, since you can just open up these back doors to let the horses out. This setup isn’t a possibility for every barn, but it can be a great system if your layout allows for it!

Add Swing-Out Feeders to Stalls

When it comes to making feeding time more convenient, using swing-out feeders can make a big difference. Swing-out hay and grain feeders in your stalls mean that you can feed horses without having to unlatch the stall door and enter the stall.

Install Automatic Waterers

Automatic waterers, whether installed in your horse’s stall or in his pasture, can be major time savers. They’re particularly convenient in the winter, since they can help to provide fresh, unfrozen water if they’re equipped with a heating system. If you’re tired of hauling water or hoses, then definitely consider adding automatic waterers to your barn.

Taking the time to design your barn to maximize your convenience can really pay off in the long run. Your time is valuable, and you won’t regret these smart modifications!
