Insurance 101 with Mike King - Are you ready for Show Season?

Show season is upon us and the planning process is well underway for horse owners everywhere as they look forward to “getting out there”.

Ideally, the horse is fit and ready and the owner/rider is prepared for what will hopefully be a successful year.

This is the opportune time to review insurance coverages you have in place (or may need) to protect you, the horse, tack and equipment, trailers etc. while you are travelling about to various horse show venues.

Here in Canada, Provincial equine associations provide their members an insurance component as part of their annual membership and in some cases, offer “optional insurance” coverage for horses, accident insurance for the rider, travel coverage, tack and equipment coverage and discounts on all things horse insurance related. Over the last 15 years, these benefits have proven to be of real value for horse enthusiasts of all types, particularly the automatic coverage for personal liability insurance and accident insurance. Given that these two policies cover the member anywhere in the world and under almost all horse activities, the benefits of membership is clear.

Looking forward to the 2010 Season, it is a great idea to seek out your Provincial Equine Association (PEA) to see what they have to offer and what they can do for you.

For those of us who are no longer showing, the PEA is still a great resource to find out what is going on in the horse industry, where to find horse related equipment, a new coach, a vet and much more.

After a few weeks away from posting on this website, and now that we are catching up with Spring… we will be in touch sooner than later to keep this “insurance for horses” dialogue going. Please let me know if you have a question on anything related to insurance.

As always, Mike can be reached through this site or at mking@intercityinsurance.com
