hello everyone,

my name is jay and i'm looking for a horse to spend the next few years with while i get back into horses. i am debating weather going to buy a yearling or go to a breeder looking for a certin horse. Last year i went to the equine affaire and met a beautiful horse that was a standardbred/draft cross. i've never drooled or wanted a horse like him as bad as i did, and i thought maybe i'd get over it when i got home. But now i'm looking to buy a horse to work with and i can't get him out of my mind.

My thought is to go to a draft cross breeder and talk with them about buying a baby. i want also, because i grew up with arabs to be able to go back to that breed. But with my size i cannot ride pure breed arabs. so my hope now is to find someone to work with to breed a draft/standardbred/arab cross. i know there is a breeding farm that has the horse from the equine affaire.

ANY thoughts are welcomed. My goal is to have a horse i can take to arab shows and be regestered as an arab cross, do dressage and later on train the horse for endurance riding slowly. My goal is going to train a horse for endurance riding. So lots of goals and alot of time to work on all of them. So any thoughts or suggestions please feel free.

i've been riding since i was 6 years old, and have started working with a quater horse on relearning the basics and learning how to train an older horse.

tentitive thought on time line:

1. show for 2 years in halter with the horse and work on ground training till the horse is 3-4 years old.
2. train the horse for basic riding and dressage for a year or two, and show him as a 6 year old.
3. start endurance training with him as a 8 year old and work for 2 years on that until can do endurance.

All those goals depend on conformation. But i'm dreaming big and looking at the first steps.

Thanks for reading.

i found a mare for sale that has hucklebey barry as a sire. He and his son are two horses i enjoy growing up at the arab shows. Yes they don't have the size i need, but i've inquired about her and it could be something worth thinking about. Altho i doubt i'll want to jump right into breeding.

What is the Arabian line you like? Maybe you could get the owner of one of these Arab mares to cross with a Canadian stallion, then you would have the best of both worlds, lol!

Canadian Horses are awesome, and they can do it all! (Not that I am biased or anything *lol*). The one thing to remember is that they are VERY intelligent and so you have to be careful to not let them train you... and they love to be with their people, so you have to be sure to remind them of personal boundaries.

We are so thrilled with my Canadian that now my boyfriend wants to get one of his own... and he wasn't even a horse-person before! They are their own best salesmen (uh, saleshorses?!).

Those sound like lovely ideas and i will have to look into them. . . i was looking and found an arab line that i enjoy and would like to work with, but i'm still at the begining of my search for the right horse and all the things you mentioned are alot to think of. i never thought of the Canadian Horse or many crosses until recently.

Thanks again.

I remember reading in an old book on Arabs that the Arab x Percheron cross showed more riding quality than the TB x Percheron cross. I don't know if anyone is doing this now. Remember that the Percheron already has Arab blood in it though that cross was several centuries ago.
I've heard good things about standardbreds on this site and the Amish seem to like them as buggy horses.
Have you looked at the Canadian Horse? They go up to 16 hands, often have a drafty (think heavy Morgan) build, and this blood went into both the Morgan and Standardbred breeds here in the USA. Their owners sure seem to like them. You can find breeders on the web.
