Did you know that tomorrow is National Go for a Ride Day? National Go for a Ride Day encourages everyone to get out and go for a ride, whether it be by car, bicycle, train, or, of course, horseback. If you want to celebrate National Go for a Ride Day, or if you’re just looking for a change of pace, then think about giving one of these fun suggestions a try.

Go On a Guided Trail Ride

Guided trail rides often allow you to enjoy nature on horseback in the company of your not-so-horsey friends and family. If everyone’s up for the adventure, then look for a nearby barn that hosts trail rides for the public. Ask ahead of time about whether riding helmets are supplied, and whether the rides are English, Western, or a combination of both.

Tip: It’s a good idea to visit the barn ahead of time to get a sense of the operation. Take a look at the trail horses and check out their weight and hooves to make sure that you’d feel comfortable and safe riding them. Even if the facility offers helmets, it’s still best to bring your own if you can, since you know they’ll fit and that they’re in good shape.

Incorporate Riding Into a Vacation

Planning to take a vacation to a different state or country? There’s no better way to do some exploring than on horseback. Many vacation destinations offer horseback tours that range from the laid-back and relaxing to the intense and exciting. Be sure to call the riding facility ahead of time to find out the length and intensity of the ride, along with the recommended level for riders.

Go for a Hay Ride or Sleigh Ride

Now is the season for hay rides and sleigh rides. Depending on your weather and climate, you might be able to do one or both. Sleigh rides add a classic enchantment to the Christmas season, so you might look into incorporating one into your holiday celebration, or even giving one as a gift to someone special.

Try Something Completely Different

For the adventurous riders out there, really change things up. Ever ridden sidesaddle before? Give it a try! (Of course, please do so on a horse trained for sidesaddle, and using an actual sidesaddle.) Gymkhanas and mounted games are fun ways that you can do different activities with your horse. You can also switch up your discipline, or try riding a new horse.

What new experiences do you want to try on horseback?
