Natural Horsemanship Solutions: Nippy Issues Solved


An owner writes about her 2 month old foal “she is starting to get a little mouthy, if she tries to bite, I usually just poke her on the nose. Is this the right thing to do?”


It’s a good think you are not doing nothing, or the problem could get worse. However, by poking her in the nose you are kind of turning it into a game.


If a horse is nipping at you then your horse is in your personal space. The first thing you need to do is become more aware of your personal space and protect yourself by not allowing the horse within an arm length’s of space unless you invited the horse in for a rub, etc.


You want to make sure you hold the lead rope with 1-2ft of slack so that you are not a tempting biting target, but also so that you are not trapping your horse and reinforcing a predator-prey relationship instead of a leader-follower relationship.


You need to make the space around you more uncomfortable. There are two easy ways to do this.
