Horses prefer being with horses in the wild. The carrot of freedom and self direction and community of the herd is stronger than anything that people have to offer so to develop your bond of trust with your horse, rather than getting the horse to join you, why don’t you focus on joining the horse so that you can understand their life and what it takes to redirect their focus. Let these conditions take over your focus and be with your horse on their terms. Take this opportunity to fall in love with nature, discover how to be in the moment and at peace with what is; become aware of the system in nature and the community of the herd. Become a wildlife lover and enjoy the experience. Take pictures and groom your horse when they itch. Bring food like alfalfa and wait for them to finish it. When they finish it, follow them if you can. Go with them if they will let you. Pay attention to the distance they would like you to keep.

Why is it that horses must follow our lead for us to feel good about the connection we share with them? They might have the same feelings we do. They might be saying why is it that to have a bond with you, I must go where you go?

Enjoy the time that you have to fall in love with the relationship as it is. If you become one with your horse in their freedom you can better understand their point of view and then when their point of view does not hurt your feelings, you will be better equipped to make choices to empower your leadership.
