October 5th through October 11th

October 7, 2001 – Jerry Bailey, a Thoroughbred jockey, won the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile on a horse named Hap, making him the first rider to earn more than $20 million worth of purse money in a single year. His previous record of earnings made in a single racing season was $19,465,376, which he earned in 1996. Bailey has won each of the Triple Crown races – the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont – twice each, as well as fourteen Breeders’ Cup races.

October 8, 2008 - The famous racehorse John Henry was euthanized at age thirty-two. John Henry earned more than $6.5 million during his racing career and he was named the Horse of the Year twice. He also received seven Eclipse awards. John Henry was retired for the last twenty-two years of his life where he lived at the Kentucky Horse Park. Despite his somewhat cranky nature (he was known for his habits of biting and kicking), John Henry was a major public attraction. He was euthanized after experiencing kidney failure. The horse, a gelding, has no offspring.

October 10, 1942 – Kidron, a horse known for his service during World War I, died. He was Army General John J. Pershing’s horse and became famous mainly for his ceremonial use. As advancing technology left the war horse with little to no role during World War I, Kidron appeared in photographs with General Pershing in a victory parade on the Champs in Paris. He carried General Pershing in a second victory parade in New York City at the end of the war. Kidron was later retired and died at age thirty-six.
