October 22, 1883 – The first National Horse Show was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event lasted for four days and featured over three hundred show, work, and race horses. The National Horse Show is America’s largest indoor horse show. It now offers one of the highest levels of equestrian competition. October 23, 1946 - The Palomino Horse Breeders of America (the PHBA) was incorporated in Mineral Wells, Texas. The PHBA was originally created in the 1930’s in California. Its international headquarters were located in Mineral Wells until 1984, when they were relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma where they remain today. The PHBA’s goal is to preserve the purity of the blood of the breed, provide a registry for the horses, and record the history of the breed. Today there are over 71,000 horses registered with the PHBA.

October 25, 1870 - Pimlico Race Course, known as being the home of the Preakness Stakes, opened for the first time. Built in Maryland, Pimlico is the second oldest racetrack in the United States (the first is Saratoga, which opened in 1864). Pimlico was built for $25,000 at the suggestion of Maryland’s governor Oden Bowie. The race course has attracted famous racehorses such as Man o’War, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, and Cigar.
