I recently received an email from a friend that contained some "rules" her horse has enforced. I enjoyed reading these so much I decided to share them. I know each horse has their own personality and may come up with their own rules for us, but there are some that will be the same across the board. These may fall into that category. I hope you enjoy them and feel free to post some of yours in the comments section!

Rules Horses Teach Us (According to Grace):

-Don’t come to the barn at feeding time. I won’t be happy to see you – especially if you get out the saddle and bridle. Remember that equestrian activities are dangerous, especially if you try to ride during feeding time.

-Don’t try to fake my meal so that you can ride during feeding time. I know the difference between a handful of grain and a full meal. Give me a break.

-Don’t ride more than once a day. This is a huge equine insult and breaks the one ride per day courtesy rule. If you decide to break this rule, the second ride of the day won’t be pleasant.

-My performance outside of the dressage arena is between you and me. Once I enter “the stage” in front of a judge, I will appear to be bombproof and obedient. All low scores are due to the rider. Feel free to carry the “magic wand” (dressage whip) if it makes you feel better. But, if you tap me with it accidentally, I will react as though I have been tazered. It is best not to tap me with it.

-Accept the fact that I can see paranormal activity. The sightings are especially high when we are riding away from the barn so I will walk very, very slowly and spook frequently. Once we are headed back to the barn, I’ll pick up the pace. All paranormal activity is gone and I can walk through a wall of fire if necessary to get back home.

-Follow my rules and I will give you 110% and be your dream horse. Breaking them is not recommended – ride at your own risk.

And one from my own horse Taylor:

-If you are my owner and bring me treats (as you should always do), they are MY treats. Do not share them with the other horses nearby. You are MY owner and those are MY treats. I do not want to share. Let their owners bring them their own treats. I will become very indignant with you for sharing. You have just cheated me out of a carrot, regardless of whether or not I have eaten every other one in the bag.

Hope you enjoyed them! :)

"And after you've fed me my carrots, do NOT expect me to stand there with orange foam all over my mouth when you have a perfectly good sleeve for me to wipe myself on!"
