At some point in their riding careers, many people wonder whether they should give riding a break. Maybe your life outside of the barn has gotten too busy, or maybe you don’t find the same enjoyment in riding that you once did. But should you take a break from riding?

Return to Riding Refreshed

A break from riding can be a good thing in many situations. A break can give you time to take a step back and assess what you enjoy about your riding life and what you don’t. Maybe you’ve gotten super focused on competing and miss the relaxing rides that you once had. Or maybe you’re bored and it’s time for a new discipline.

Riding should be an activity that you enjoy, and if it’s not, then a break may be in order. Some time away from riding can be a good thing, especially when it allows you to return to the saddle refreshed and excited for your future.

Don’t Be Governed By the Fear of Not Returning

Many riders are hesitant to take a break from riding for fear that they won’t return. It’s a realistic situation – life gets busy and takes over, and you never find your way back to the saddle. As we age, starting back up with riding again becomes increasingly difficult.

This fear of not returning doesn’t have to hold power over your decision to take a break. Instead of worrying that you won’t return to riding, set yourself a date by which you will decide if you want to go back. Making sure that you stay fit during your break can make a return to riding easier. Remember, returning to riding is a choice, and if you decide to go back, then you will find a way to start riding again.

Take Control Over the Length of Your Break

A break doesn’t have to be years long. Sometimes just getting some space for a few months is plenty of time. If you’re debating over taking a break from riding, remember that you can control the length of the break.

Don’t Be Ashamed of Taking a Break

Some riders hate to take breaks from riding because they feel that their friends, trainer, and other riders will think less of them. This shouldn’t ever be the case. It’s up to you to decide if and when you need a break. There is no shame in taking some time off from riding, especially when doing so allows you to come back to the sport you love stronger and better than ever.

Taking a break from riding can definitely be a positive move, but no one can make that decision for you. If you choose to take a break, then we look forward to welcoming you back into the saddle when you return.
