STOP PRESS - Even Mark Todd can be led astray

This afternoon Kevin Staut of France won the Individual Gold Medal in the European show jumping championships in Windsor, England, riding his 'Selle Francais' stallion Kraque Boom Bois Margot.

He is by Olisco (by the legendary jumping sire Jalisco B out of a mare who is over 60% Arab ) who jumped very successfully in the United States in the 1990's ridden by Michael Matz, and out of Joyau D'Or a 'Selle Francais' mare.

When you do the analysis on this stallion's breeding what do we find?

The largest percentage of genes in Kraque Boom Bois Margot are thoroughbred with among others five crosses of Orange Peel, two of Ultimate (by Umidwar) and a cross of Furioso. He is at least 55% throughbred. Plus he is a little over 15% Arab and has something around 5% trotter blood... with a little hackney thrown in!

So add these 3 together together and you have a jumper that is approx three quarters 'hot' blooded....and what a joy to watch. Congratulations to Kevin Staut and the French team. Happy days..William

Here is Kraque Boom Bois Margot…what great quality....could have been an event horse or a dressage horse as well as a show jumper.

Not all Warmbloods as individuals carry high percentages of thoroughbred. But all accept modern day Thoroughbred infusions for genetic stability as well as to produce a lighter hotter sport type. Now whether your breeding to be competitive in the sporting world or are simply breeding for the established breed standard is what really is going to determine the TB percentages.

It's true the best horses out there are half or more TB.

I would say there is no better horse than the TB for anything classical. (Hunters,Driving, etc). It truly was and is the most succesful pure-breed ever.
If not for the fact that I strongly believe that Americas Sporthorses need their own identity and title as the American counterpart to the major WB breeds.

Thankyou for this 'Over the Fences'...it is not actually true that all warm bloods have a very high TB influence, but as I have been pointing out in my blogs many of the elite performers do. Without looking at pedigrees it is also noticeable more quality jumper and dressage horses are being used in the last ten years...just as a number of stud books are becoming short of quality sires. The use of thoroughbred sires in the warm blood world in the last thirty years has statistically increased not decreased. I mention some of these sires in my recent blogs. William

The best Jumping horses often carry high amounts of TB. Probably in all the Warmbloods you would have a very high TB influence. The native or otherwise non hot blood only really being influencial early in the development.

wow Furioso, is that the breed based on the Thoroughbred "Furioso", or are you speaking of the horse?

I did not know that blood analysis could reveal actual lineages if so.

The French have been using hot-blood crosses for centuries. They were famous for their Anglo-Arabs when I was young. When they had Algeria they brought in several Barbs. I do not know if they ever used them for their Selle Francais breed, but definitely lots of TB and Arab. They have also been breeding racing quality Arabs for decades, using the Muniqi and related strains (possible Turkoman blood) to use to cross with the TB for their Anglo-Arab. I suspect that these horses did not become terribly popular internationally because being HOT required better riding, especially at dressage.
