Finances are tight and the world economy is putting pressure on every business out there to do "more with less".
Employees are your most important asset and should be compensated accordingly, but sometimes giving a raise is just not possible.
It may come as a shock to you to find out that most employees desire more than just a paycheque in order to make them happy. In fact the number one thing that employees wanted the most was RESPECT AND COMMUNICATION (it was a tie) and guess what? These things are FREE!
They cost only a little of your time and consideration.
Consider these 5 ways to add quality of life to your employees:
1. Job security. In this volatile job market, some employees are very nervous about losing their job and not being able to find another one. Anything you can say that will let them know you care about their future and will make every effort to have a job for them in these troubled times will mean a lot.
2. Training or certification. If you can offer any type of special training or certification through your own efforts or through specialized classes, you will enhance the career of your employees and may improve their attractiveness to future employers should you have to let them go.
Succesful employers encourage learning and certification and may even allow time off work to achieve their personal goals. Everyone like to feel that they have achieved something. It keeps up morale and interest in the job at hand.
3. Flexible hours. If you can provide personal time in the middle of the work day, or get feedback from your employees about special personal times they would like to arrange, you will send the message that you care about them. QUID PRO QUO, this for that. Aren't there times when you need extra cover at the barn, or help while you are away. Extend that flexibility to your staff and you will be greatly rewarded.
4. If you do not provide health insurance for your employees, look in to providing stated benefits accident coverage. Sometimes this kind of coverage is very inexpensive. Any kind of health related protection will go a long way with most employees.
5. THANK YOU. Make sure your employees understand that they perform critical functions that are absolutely essential to the success of your business. Your success is their success. Everyone likes to be doing meaningful work and be appreciated for it.
