This Week in Horse History - July 26th Through August 1st
July 26th, 1968 – The palomino Quarter Horse gelding, Kaweah Bar, won his first stakes race today. Kaweah Bar won the Leo Handicap, held at Los Alamitos. He earned the title of the "Palomino Express" and would become Quarter Horse racing’s world champion at the young age of two years old. During his career, Kaweah Bar would go on to win 38 races, 21 of which were stakes races. He was a 1998 inductee into the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame.

July 29th, 1943 - Joe Hancock, a famous American Quarter Horse sire, was put down today. The 1923 horse was a tremendous racehorse and went on to sire 155 foals, many of which had successful careers in racing and reining. Joe Hancock was put down after foundering.

August 1st, 2009 - For the first time at Rockingham Park, Standardbred races were held today. The racetrack had been in existence for 103 years. On August 1st, 2009, two trotting races were held, and were won by Do Si Do Lavee and Matthers Lavee.
