April 29, 2003 – Barbaro, the famous Thoroughbred racehorse, was born at Springmint Farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky. His sire was Dynaformer and his dam was La Ville Rouge. He was owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson. Barbaro was foaled and raised by Bill Sanborn. In 2006 Barbaro would go on to win the Kentucky Derby before breaking his leg in the Preakness. Although extreme measures were undertaken to repair his leg, Barbaro was euthanized in January of 2007.

May 1, 1879 - The studbook of the Friesian horse was established. The studbook, called the Friesch Paarden-Stamboek, was created to register and monitor the breeding of the Friesians. The breed originated in the Netherlands during the thirteenth century. It faced competition in the heavier draft breeds, as it was often criticized as being too light and dancelike. Thankfully, breeders in Friesland, such as the Royal Stables in Borculo, worked to save the breed, and today the Friesian is a popular breed.
