THREE SURE FIRE WAYS TO SABOTAGE YOUR CONFIDENCE

Are you sabotaging your confidence? Are you in your own way? Take a look at these three ways to unconsciously, yet effectively, cut your own confidence off at the knees.

The Time Saboteur. The Time Saboteur never gives themselves enough time. They may be very generous to others with their time, but when you look at it very carefully, they don’t give themselves the time to make their projects wildly successful. Here are some other clues: always running late; their home, truck, trailer, tack room is in chaos because they don’t have/take the time to put things away and then they create lateness and overwhelm because they can’t find anything! They are over committed. They prioritize their most treasured projects last. The Time Saboteur is disorganized. They are unclear, confused or overwhelmed about many things. Hint: getting clear takes time! The super multi-tasker also falls into the time category. We can only ride one horse at a time….and then we do best when we can be completely present and in the zone.  That is a beautiful example of giving yourself over to time.  Take this same philosophy into the rest of your life and you will be amazed at the difference it makes.

The Perfectionist Saboteur.  The Perfectionist has trouble completing things because ‘it’ is never good enough. They can quickly take the joy out of creating and making things happen. It is hard to feel confidence when you are either grinding away or super critical. (Perfectionism can be a fast path to burnout for both you and your horse.) The Perfectionist can also sabotage confidence by keeping themselves from starting something. “I can’t see how to do it perfectly from beginning to end so I won’t even start.” Control is another facet of the Perfectionist. “If I can just control this ‘thing’ (i.e. my horse) then I will feel confident.”

The Externally-Focused Saboteur. Confidence gets zapped for the externally-focused person because the very heart of confidence is to be connected to your inner gifts in the present moment. Being perpetually distracted never leaves space for working through the tough issues. What kind of behaviors am I talking about? Excessive texting, drinking caffeine, gossip, electronic games, excessive sugar intake. Any type of behavior that is used repeatedly as an escape. Confidence is about learning and earning your way in the world.

So what can you do about it if you find yourself in one or more of these categories? Start respecting yourself and time. In fact, give yourself extra time! It is okay to put yourself first. If you are the Perfectionist, add more play and joy into your life; true confidence is actually a happy and joyful experience. And lastly, practice just being in the moment. Meditate, journal, spend extra time just hanging out with your horse; give yourself time to just be. Confidence is about knowing and accepting who you are right now.
