Tips to Transition from Your Barn Life to Your Outside Life

Sometimes life leaves us no choice but to immediately go from the horse barn back to our “outside lives.” Whether it’s heading to the office or a family function, we may find ourselves trying to hide the evidence we’ve been to the barn. If you have to return to your “outside life” immediately after leaving the barn, here are some tips to ease this transition.

Keep a Change of Clothes in Your Car

Simply changing your clothes can be a great way to refresh, helping to leave the smell of the barn behind you. Keep a change of clothes in your car when you go to the barn – don’t bring them inside the barn when you ride, or you may find that they’ve absorbed the barn smell, too.

Don’t forget to also bring a change of shoes you can slip into once you’re ready to go.

Have a Hairbrush Handy

A hairbrush is an absolute must before you leave the barn. A quick brushing can help to tame out-of-control helmet hair, leaving you looking put together again. Don’t forget to bring along any hair accessories, like elastic bands or clips, that you might like to use when styling your hair.

Store Sprays in Your Trunk

There are two very important sprays that can make a big difference in preparing to reenter the outside world: hair spray and body spray. Keep small bottles of both in your tack trunk so you always have them handy when you need them. If your barn has a nice bathroom, then you might want to keep sprays and other touch-up supplies in there. Deodorant is another great item to have around in case you need it.

Take a Shower

If you're lucky enough to board your horse at a barn that has a shower for riders to use, take advantage of it. Store small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and bring along flip flops, to make showering easy and fast.

In lieu of a shower, cleansing wipes can actually do quite well. Keep a pack in your tack trunk and use them to wipe down your face, neck and arms when you’re getting ready to go. They can leave you feeling refreshed and cleaner.

While you might not always be able to swing home after being at the barn, these tips can help to make your transition back to the outside world an easier one.
