There is nothing in this world like a horse excited to see you.

Nothing.

Those two ears pricked forward right at you.  A soft nicker of greeting.  A velvet muzzle thrust into your hands.  For me, these small actions just make my heart swell with joy and love.  I love to walk toward my OTTB (off-track Thoroughbred) and watch those ears prick forward and his head raise.  I'm sure he knows there will be a treat involved at some point but I'm going to say it's all about me.

When he first came to his new home, he had been away from the racetrack for over six months and had been at the rescue.  I brought him to a boarding stable where he would enjoy his time in large pastures and minimal time in a stall.  There were some new sights and sounds for him here that he had to get used to.  One of the first things that I did was take him on a tour of the large arena.  This arena is filled with dressage cones, jumps, cavellitti, fake flowers in a judge's stand, seating, and so on.  I wasn't sure how he was going to react to all these new things at first but I should've known Taylor would take it all in stride.  He entered the arena with ears pricked and took it all in.  He checked everything out with the once over and an occassional sniff and plodded along obediently with me.  He was most fascinated with the view at the far end of the arena.  From there, you can see the large pasture in the valley with horses dotting the landscape and the hills rising above it.  It is a beautiful site.  At this time, he was still adjusting in his small pen near the barn.  He stood there staring out for several minutes with ears pricked.  Moments like that make you wonder what they are thinking.  I told him he would be out there soon.

Taylor has transitioned into the large pasture now.  He has a little 13-14 hand buddy named Blaze and they go everywhere together.  I was told the other morning that Taylor and Blaze took off at a run across the pasture in a race against the wind.  This ex-racehorse will now run whenever he wants to in a race against friends.  I am determined to witness it some time.
