FRIENDSHIP IS WHAT MAKES THE WORLD AROUND US, WORK!

For several years now I have had a blind female raccoon coming to the house. It started when I took over a feral colony of cats, with which the young raccoon had joined forces. We fed her along with the cats primarily because 1) she was with them, and 2) she was a baby on her own. Then we noticed her sight had gone either by having been torn or from infection, and it was too late to save it. Eventually she became a mother and each successive year she brings the kits up onto the deck to be introduced and fed, It thrills me that all the raccoons and the cats have never gotten into fights (in spite of all the horrible tales of coons in the city), and seem to sense when one of them needs help. I have seen the larger "male" cat stand between a new cat to the area in order to keep it away from Momma until it understands the rules. I have also seen Momma nip her little ones if they growl and head to one of our cats. They soon learn "the rules"
PS. As soon as the babies are out on their own they scatter and are more than capable of looking after themselves. After mating season is over, only Momma keeps returning...
