Wow! What wonderful people and what an amazing place for the horses to live out their lives. I had never heard of this place..with their new name and new start..thank you so much for putting this out there for more people to view and be aware of some of the wonderful people there are out there in this world!! Looks like they have a sanctuary for dogs as well!! :)

Hi Shirley... Thank you for your note. We are kindred spirits! I have always let my horses rub their heads on my back, and we also give them all treats...we've never had problems with "pushy" behavior. I hope you get a chance to read my books, "The Horses of Proud Spirit" and "Hoof Prints: Stories from Proud Spirit". You'll love reading about the sanctuary and how the horses found their way to us, plus, ALL proceeds from book sales go to the care of the 70 plus horses here. Take care!

How wonderful what you are able to do and that 'YOU" are able to do it. What a grand life!
One of the things I really liked was seeing you let the horse rub on your back side. I LOVE THIS When my horse does it. Most people say not to let them do this but if feels so good to both of us and in the six years I've had him he's never been overly rough or rude about it.
Your whole story here is inspiring. As of now my circumstances don't allow me to have more then one but I'd love to be near you and contribute time helping horses. I'm looking for a local place but haven't found the right thing ....maybe tomorrow.
Keep horsen around!

Hi Nkki...Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback. I hope you get a chance to read my books. They tell the story of how Proud Spirit came to be one of the most successful and longest existing sanctuaries in the US. And you asked about purchasing the PBS documentary. It is available, but you have to phone the original broadcasting station: WEDU in FL. You'll find their 800 number on their website, but the DVD is not listed on the website store...you have to phone them.

Hi Nora...You asked about a possible film: In 2005 PBS filmed a documentary about Proud Spirit. It went on to win an Emmy and is currently airing nationwide in the US and parts of Canada. All you have to do is contact your local PBS affilliate and request they air it.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comments. I wanted to be sure everyone knows that all proceeds from book sales go to the care of the horses. There are 71 currently living at Proud Spirit, so we are really trying to spread the word about both titles. The second book, Hoof Prints, tells the incredible story of moving 40 horses half-way across the country. A monumental undertaking!
