Start in the walk and/or trot instead of in the canter as in this video. Keep your inside leg on as you bring your two arms ever so slightly to the inside to lead the shoulders in front of the inside hind leg. The shoulders only have to come in an inch or two. If your horse bends his neck to the inside, ask for counter-flexion at his poll before you try to move the shoulders in.

loved the video - NOW, for me at the earliest stages, how do you train "1st position" - that execise is obviously a critical part for training straightness...THANKS!
