Well I got curious about what was being done on this bone fracture problem. Aside from trauma, I found this study:

which seems to indicate a high glycemic food and a high glycemic response in the horses, especially in larger yearlings lead to more bone fractures. As well an earlier study found young horses were not getting enough minerals in their diets to support optimal bone strength. Need more studies. Pretty shocking that the rate of OCD in the youngsters was commonly about 10%, wow that seems high.

I agree on the TB/bone problem. It could be diet, maybe too much grain or just racing them  too young as Grandin suggested, her point being someone has to look into it, and do some good studies. It just doesn't make sense for a horse's bone to break on relatively soft track when mustangs and endurance horses handle rocky trails at various speeds (there's the conditioning argument). Maybe these horses are like the highly trained ballerinas of the horse world that are kept too thin in order to perform athletically, then deal with poor bone structure as a result.

I too enjoyed the clip. Her eyes sure lite up when talking about the bulls and how relaxed and calm they were. I enjoyed her explanations of how a bucking horse is trained to buck as well. I feel that the interviewers cornered her a bit and that they kinda over whelmed her, I suspect that there wasn't any prep time nor pre arranged questions. Some I felt had added agendas one in paticular wouldn't leave alone as to why and how she got to the stampede. I do not agree so much as to how breeders need to fix the thoroughbred. Much too complicated of an issue. Now that the genome of the TB has been identified and classified we will see advancements anyway.Bone strenght and size I feel is more of a conditioning aspect and modelling issue than a breeding issue.IMO

I've been eagerly waiting for Temple Grandin to put out a statement on the stampede, what a great interview. Here's someone with some clout and a moderate view who breeders might listen to. Loved her comment "If racehorses are breaking their legs in races maybe we shouldn't be breeding those animals". Let's not scrap every animal oriented use, let's improve the animals through better breeding. Hip dysplasia in dogs has been greatly improved through a lot of effort from quality breeders, so can canon bones in horses, and why not bleeding in race horses? I hope this interview gets picked up by the tv networks as well so more people can see it.
