Peter Leone Wins $30,000 Lake Placid Jumper Classic at Lake Placid Horse Show

Lake Placid, New York - U.S. Olympic veteran Peter Leone of Greenwich, CT rode Wayfarer to victory in the $30,000 Lake Placid Jumper Classic, Friday's featured event at the 46th annual Lake Placid Horse Show, Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC.

Twenty-four entries rode over the 15-jump, first-round course designed by Show Jumping Hall of Famer Steve Stephens at the North Elba Show Grounds with 9 turning in fault-free rounds to advance to the jump-off. Alvaro Tejada, who will represent Guatemala in next month's Pan American Games in Toronto, was the first to master the 7-jump, jump-off course, taking the lead with a clean ride in 29.718 seconds.

Three riders later, Leone, a team Silver Medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, moved Tejada out of the lead with a clean ride in 29.548 seconds on Wayfarer, a horse he bred at his Connecticut-based Lionshare Farm. "I am so proud of him," Leone said. "He's always been a great horse, right from the beginning. It's great o have him win a big class like this."

The only other clean round in the jump-off was turned in by Paul O'Shea of Ireland who finished third with a clean ride in 36.239 seconds on Primo Calypso. Fourth place went to Laura Chapot , who earlier in the day won the $5,000 Whiteface Mountain 1.40m Jumper Class on Shooting Star. Chapot had the fastest time of 28.855 in the jump-off but a rail down gave her four faults and her fourth-place finish.
