I say shut down the "sport" of showing very high stepping gaits. The don't allow dog fighting. How is torturing horses with chemical burns and beating them to tolerate torture, forcing them to trot around with sore feet, any different? The horse industry could regulate itself if it had the will.  It's an insult to the judicial system that anyone involved in this cruelty should be allowed to own, breed,  or "train" a horse again. If you can't eradicate the bad apples, then don't allow the shows, or don't allow the extreme forms of the gaits.I think the head prosecutor can still not accept the plea deal and go ahead with prosecution. That would be the only right thing to do.

Look at the animal abuse laws of Tennesse

Look at the deceptive trade practice laws of Tennesse.

NO plea deal, send him behind bars where the sob will face the justice the cons have for people like him

I don't get "probation". That's like saying, go and sin no more.for something  they did when they weren't supposed to before. What gives????

That is so sad. I love Tennessee Walking Horses  for trail riding, but have never been impressed with the unnatural gaits displayed at shows (it just looks weird and awkward). Still, I am horrified and surprised that this is how that odd gait is manufactured. I'm so glad ABC ran this story and that it is improving horses lives.

I had previously filed a criminal complaint to the State of Tennesse against the association.  

Now maybe the State will take action.

You are right B. G., it is a slippery slope.  People willingly learn and apply these techniques just so they can win in show classes.  If they do not do this stuff, then they have no chance of WINNING.  Not only that but the JUDGES also are taught to reward these travesties of equine movement.  Just think about it, IN MANY DISCIPLINES, A HORSE WHO IS NOT TURTURED AT SOME TIME CANNOT WIN AT THE SHOWS.

The only defense a person has is to learn the concepts and ethics of good horsemanship and to take a deep, serious vow before your Supreme Power to never, ever, ever torture a horse just to increase its chances of winning a cheap ribbon.  I learned the English (as in England) hunt seat ethical codex,  there are also some Western ones that are as good, but in the shows both schools of good horsemanship ethics are rare/non-existent.

There was no remorse on his face at all when confronted in front of his house. I suddenly flashed on an image of a plantation foreman in the antebellum south with slaves.

As to how someone can become like that? It's not nearly as hard as we wish it was. Psychologists have shown how it can be done quite easily, and, sadly, the majority of humans are susceptible. He didn't start that way, nor did he get that way overnight, but he was not alone in that barn, there were helpers who learned his methods, and there are still other trainers out there.

And the dame who has reformed. Nice try but you'd have to be brain and heart dead to do that to an animal. Now you have discovered how to treat an animal humanely, duh.
