help I have a 6 year old mare who is green but not that green?. I have had her a year before i got her she was ran from one end of the arena to the other! by a person greener then the mare. For the first six months spent the time getting to know her and hoping she would take to me lots of elbow grease! so many treats! hours and hours of ground work now there is a very trusting friendship.Everything was going fine until i asked for a lope to the right she is very left handed and unbalanced and on top of that very stiff to the right. We do flex for a warm up small circles which she does well ! problem is she rushes and long trots into the lope only to the right. She all so carries her head low and locks her neck . some feed back would be great.

Are you able to lunge her? If so, can she lope on the lunge line both ways?
yes she can lunge and does lope both ways even on the lunge she long trots ! now her jog is slow just not balance not strong enough yet.
get a chiropracter and a vet out..check off that she is sound, then slowly work on her, keep asking until she gives what you want, and push her for a few strides then stop, tell her how good she is then cool her off. At first you may have to chase her into the lope and it won't be pretty but eventually once she gets calm about the whole deal she will relax into it.

I personally think she has a shoulder/wither area out, maybe a few ribs, her neck, and pole, and she may need her teeth done..but thats me.

Good job for sticking with her though, she probably appreciates it.
Hi Janet, Sounds like you've started well in gaining her trust , don't blow it now by CHASING her into a canter. I guess the reason you are not getting a canter on the right is because she is stiff on that side and unsure of what you want. Only ask for a canter in a corner , lift and open your inside rein , ask for the canter,if the horse speeds up in the trot stop asking and slow it down before asking again, sit still and wait, do these things and your horse will continue to trust you and she will GET it . So don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, you've been patient so far, keep it up. Cheers Geoffrey
Hi Geoffrey thanks for your reply! your right she is stiff on that side therefore i do a lot of bending hopefully to stretch her out. I don"t chase her into the lope and i always ask in the corner.Lifting the inside rein i have tried this you have to understand that this mare locks her neck and jaw so i have been picking her up with both reins two out of six times she gets the lead. She fast trots i slow her down i sit still and ask again and she scoots into the lope again. I have had her checked out by the vet her teeth have been done she is sound and not sore backed sometimes i think she has got my number ?
OK Janet, lets try something different. Think about stretch instead of bend. See what happens when you put weight in your outside stirrup ( like your trying to squish a bug) and look over your inside shoulder, you should feel the horse stretching to the inside after a couple of circles, just keep your inside leg in place to keep the horse from making the circle smaller. This may help even the horse out and give her the strength to make the canter easier. Worth a try. Cheers Geoffrey
