Is this substance commonly used for endurance rides?
FEI head's husband under horse doping investigation

The husband of FEI president Princess Haya is under investigation for the return of positive doping tests to a horse after two endurance rides.
Tahhan, a horse owned by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, tested positive to 16-b Hydroxy-Stanozolol and Guanabenz after 120km rides in Bahrain and Dubai in January and February.

The testing was undertaken by the Sheikh's staff, and he voluntarily informed the FEI of the results on March 19.

The Sheikh said in an official statement that he was unaware of the administration of the substances, and condemned their use. However he also accepted that he was the "person responsible" for the horse.

He is also undertaking an internal investigation into the cases, and said he would share the information with the FEI. The Sheikh withdrew from a ride last weekend because of the cases.

Guanabenz is used to treat high blood pressure in humans. In horses, it is used to reduce the incidence or severity of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Hydroxy-Stanozolol is a metabolite of Stanozolol, a synthetic anabolic steroid.

Hydroxy-stanozolol is an anabolic steriod used to build muscle. It's banned in Europe and FEI competition, though is controversially still allowed in horse racing in some US states.
It was used legally for the 2008 Kentucky Derby winner, with a curious reversal of fortunes. Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness stakes in fine fashion, then lined up for the Belmont stakes as odds on favourite to complete the triple crown (for the first time in 30 years). He came last in the race and the trainer, Rick Dutrow, admitted using stanozolol on him.

Guanabenz has also been used for years in US racing circles, with cases dating back beyond 2001. In 2008, trainers Cody Autrey and Michael Pender received hefty fines and suspensions for competing horses with it in their systems at the Del Mar track in California.

Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is MASSIVE in racing circles, so I am not surprised his endurance horses have been dosed up...
