I am trying to reduce 'gluten' intake and really feel that it sets up an inflammatory responce in my body.

Dr Atkins forecast the diabetes epidemic due to the North American diet; the next epidemic is Crohns, Colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.  

When I was gainfully employed - Pilates on the Reformer was great for my core! I loved it! Made everything so much stronger. Now I have been lazy and am in need of lunge lessons again....

I've got a gelding with a big stride and a lofty jump! My core has to be strong to keep me balanced and my legs have to be secure over fences. I also have to watch what I eat as my metabolism is pretty slow.


As I interval train my horse I also interval train myself! Two days on one day off. I do short intense workouts at my gym. I start with 20 min sprint on the treadmill and then weight training. I love short fast workouts because I find the gym to be pretty boring for the most part, it also seems like the best way to build muscle fast.


Self board! Mucking my own stalls and lifting my own bales keeps me in pretty great shape too...


Sometimes if I find my sweet tooth is out of control or I'm putting on some extra pounds I'll go on a glycemic index based diet.. nothing that metabolizes into sugar for two weeks, or until the weight goes. I still allow for some things like dairy (lactose)... I don't want my bones breaking!! If I can fit into my show coat and my non stretchy Tailored Sportsman's I know I'm at my target weight!


It's tough being built bigger than most, but I'm lucky I can manage my weight with diet and exercise!

And other random animals that seem to find their way into our home! Gym during my lunch hour, consisting of cardio, weights and lots of core/stability exercises.
Eating a sensible diet, riding as much as possible, and getting a good nights sleep!

In the spring of 2009 I suffered a serious injury, breaking my leg and totally crushing my ankle. I gained 50 lbs and some neat permanent hardware. I spent months in a wheelchair. That same year, I bought a Rottweiler puppy. 


I've lost 10 lbs over the last few months, by regularly walking my Rottweiler and by eating healthier. It's been a slow process. I have not yet ridden this year. My goal for this year is to continue to (safely) lose weight and spend more time with my horses. Each time I walk out to the pasture and each time I brush and groom a horse brings me closer to my goal of riding again.

Wow, Linda, it sounds like you have an amazing drive to move past your injury and get healthy.  Your story is inspirational.  Stick to it and I hope you will be riding again soon!
I work at a computer all day, with my job. Now that I have finished physio for my injuries, I get up from my desk at lunch and walk through the downtown area. Everyday, even in rain or snow.
On Saturdays, I take my Rottweiler to agility class. It not only exercises the dog, I get a great workout as well.
I thought I was in shape until I started riding again after 15 years of being out of the saddle!  People think the horses do all of the work, but the rider has to be in shape too!  I run, walk on the beach and bike ride to keep my endurance up.  Pilates is great for core and inner thigh strength.  I also like yoga for staying flexible.  Recently a riding instructor suggested I take up hula hooping to loosen my hips, so I'll try to add that into the mix as well.
As for food choices, I eat several small meals throughout the day.  I try to have protein at each meal so that my blood sugar doesn't dip.  I find that this also keeps my sweet cravings in check.  Lots of fiber from fruits and veggies helps too.
I've recently started a personalized strength and flexibility programme as well as taking my dog for very long walks several days a week. I haven't ridden in some time and am trying to get into shape to start again.
