Okay I know what dapples are, that is I know what they look like, but what causes dappling? Anyone know? It always seems a sign of good health and a healthy coat, but is it? Just curious.

my young mare is really really healthy- she even has dapples on her tummy!! she proudly shows them off when rolling. lol
All I've ever heard is that it is a sign of GOOD health, with the horse feeling fine. I have never seen anything to contradict this. I have no idea of how the horses "decide" to dapple or how they actually do it.
