Central California SPCA Challenged to Meet Needs of Seized Horses
According to KSEE news, the SPCA of Fresno County, California, is struggling to care for the over 27 horses seized under extreme circumstances in the last couple of weeks.
Last week, 19 horses were found in very poor condition in Clovis. One of the animals had to be euthanized. The owner was arrested and the surviving horses were seized. Check Barnmice News report.
In addition, more starving horses were found on a property in Riverdale along with the remains of four which did not survive. These animals are now receiving basic care - food and water.
Beth Caffrey of the SPCA told KSEE24.com that:
“They're doing much better with simple things like food and water. … Part of the problem when they do starve, their body starts to eat its muscle tissue to be able to survive. They need exercise to keep their muscles built up.”
Local feed stores are helping out with donated hay, but the SPCA is trying to raise funds for fencing, farrier care and other basic necessities.
