EHV-1 Outbreak Grows to
Eleven Horses in Southern California
The EHV-1 outbreak that began last week in Orange County, California, (see Barnmice EHV-1 report) continues as eleven horses have been confirmed with the virus.
All of the affected animals are located at the same facility which has been under quarantine since the outbreak began.
The facility has been identified in the Orange County Register as the Rancho Sierra Vista Equestrian Center. Nearby horse facilities have not been affected.
On Wednesday, one of the horses which had already shown signs of fever and swelling in its hind legs, collapsed and was euthanized. Necropsy results are pending.
Biosecurity precautions have been increased at the facility.
So far, the point of origin for this outbreak has not been identified; however, there is no indication that there is a link to the outbreaks earlier in 2011.
