Absolutely! we are trying to get out at least 3 times a week.  Took the horses to the Lindsay Horse expo last weekeend and for the most part they were terrific. Junior got a bit antsy driving in the rodeo arena with  1  six horse hitchof Belgians, 2  fours of Percherons and Clydes and a tandem of  commercials. But aside from that they did a really nice job in the demonstration ring.

Was wondering where the best place to sell my driving pony was? Does anyone know anybody looking for a driving/riding pony?

Hi

I would not have liked to face it when I had just started out either, but after 30 years of being run off with on occassion I'm pretty much imune to it... not happy when it happens I might add.. as anyone can tell you when a horse is a true runaway, dead mouth runaway that is, it is like hooking on to a barn and thinking you can change it's mind!!!  Good luck, or like a friend who saw it said (and has seen Tattoo in the warm up before he races...) like being towed by a locomotive and thinking you can somehow pull it off the track??!! lol

I wasn't scared, but I was really, really worried what might happen to the little fella if he kept going, he has very little cork due to a mishap in the barn a couple of weeks ago, and his feet aren't great so we didn't take his shoes off to re-cork, with all the bad weather here, we have really bad slippery tracks... so thanks to Che we are safe... Tatters could have easily fallen which was my main fear.  Tattoo has been known to runaway to the point of exhaustion, or to the point where he is aimed off the track and then into the side of a barn... so luckily for us Che was there, and for the most part he is a much different horse than when we got him in September, or I would likely have gotten really hurt.  But I can say this, I will not at least for a long time to come drive him without Joe and Che there as they are the only certian influence over him when he is in that frame of mind.

Also don't think too many are like this, most horses are not runaways... or if they take off it is short lived.  Tattoo came from a background of abject abuse and extreme lack of training.  He came from a barn that is known to use 'hydro' on their horses, from what I understand the person in question has been known to hoist the horses off the ground and use electricity on them when they cannot fend for themselves.  This is the second horse I have gotten from his stable (not directly) and I can say that both horses have shown much the same attitudes and fears.  While Tattoo is sweet and simply scared for his life, the other horse was seriously agressive and would fight at ever turn, he also though showed the same type of manners on the track and runaway habit, as well as he like Tattoo would run off the track at every chance when we first had him.  Magoo turned out to be the best horse we ever had, and hopefully Tattoo can continue to change.  So like I said, never fear, most horses are sweet and don't come from such horrible conditions.

take care deb

Yikes, Debra, that all sounds rather scary!  Glad Tattoo slowed once Che was with him.  I have to say as a new driver that I myself still feel much more comfortable and in control while *on* a horse, rather than behind it.  Having one run off would terrify me.

Hi, I'm glad you are having a blast with your new harness.

I had a bit of 'fun' of the other type the other day... my little horse Tattoo decided that running away would be a good idea... lol

He is a dead mouth runaway if he decides so we have taken to jogging him with my dead sensible colt.  We jog him beside Che when he is calm, and the two playfight back and forth... Tattoo loves it and relaxes, forgetting everyone else but Che.  He now loves jogging, and if he does get a little hot, we just put him in behind Che and he follows my husband Joe, whom he loves... and he just simply chills... but the problem comes in getting him out the door and to the track... he is really good, and normally it isn't a problem... the problem the other day came in that Joe helps me get Tattoo out, then Che follows... we walk the horses a chunk and then Che starts jogging catching up with Tattoo and away we go no problems... the problem was that a kid on the track had his horse get away from him on the dead gallop... and ran within an inch or two of us... at the same time there was two horses coming the otherway in a training mile... so Tattoo took off... he is supper fast on the track and is known for his speed... I got a taste of it and it was way to fast for the track conditions, and for the small amount of cork he had... Thankfully for me my super colt came to the rescue... Che saw Tattoo take off, and despite the fact that he has to have a long warm up for his troublesome stomach, he set off after him... Joe and Che came to the resuce... they caught up with us after a quarter of a mile, and just as Che caught up, Tattoo started to relax... his bud was there!  Then Che pulled in front, and Tattoo of his own accord pulled in behind... and eased up with Che... thankfully we had been jogging like this for a while... or it would have been bad for Tattoo and I... he likely would have fallen at the runaway speed he was going... I have never been so glad to see that big brown head at my shoulder as I was the other day... poor little Tattoo has come a long way... but he has a ways to go.  So here's one to Che and Joe!  Thanks guys.

P.S. The first is a pic of Joe and Che, and the other is of Tattoo- who we are also breaking to ride... to help him have a better mouth and more sense. lol

WOOT!!!!!  Well, a friend and I twiddled around and got the gelding's new harness adjusted on him yesterday and made some changes, and then I line drove him.  Today, we put him to the cutter  and I drove him for the first time - yippee!!!  He was SUCH a good boy!  He is still young, so a couple of times he got a bit worried, but if he was unsure he just stopped.  He was very honest and tried so hard to do everything I asked him to do.  I think I'll spend some time this week on the tractor making him a really good track to follow - we had to deal with some lumpy cross-country bits today.  All in all a successful first outing though!
