Sorry, that should read "sell ME standardbreds".

Thanks, Darryl for that. I was thinking along those lines. I'm guessing that my best bet is to find something very close in height/build to my Clyde x TB mare, with similar (rather draft-y :-) movement. People keep trying to sell my Standardbreds and I keep declining - not that they aren't great animals, but they move so much differently than my mare. Sigh. This driving and hitching a pair together just adds a whole new element to horse-shopping. :s I can see it's maybe easier to buy an already matched team/pair, but hubby seems to think that 2 horses will be quite enough; he hasn't wrapped his head around 3.

Hi Jennifer, size is important for the overall visual look but how they move is much more important. In other words, they need to have very similar stride in their walk and trot to be paired so they can both share the load and look matched. I've seen pairs that are matched in stride and size but one is lazy and the other gets upset because it is doing all of the work. One solution when a pair doesn't work well side by side is hitch them in tandem. But that is not easy for a begining driver and doesn't solve a lazy horse's issues. Hope this was helpful. Good luck in your search and enjoy the experience.

Hi, all. I am going to ask a real "new/wannabe driver" question. I am looking for our second horse currently, one well-broke to drive both single and double. My plan is to learn to drive with it, then get my mare trained to drive, and ultimately hitch them together as a team occasionally. So, here's the silly question - How close to each other do they have to be in height? Is 2 inches difference way too much? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've now posted all three videos on Barn Mice.

Thats awesome! Very cool Darryl! I'm sure I saw your horse warm up for the dressage... I really noticed his extended trot. Boy, he can really move! We are thinking of moving up to intermediate next year as Ray would like a little more of a challenge and we think our boys can do it. We just need to work a little more on their dressage!
I'll check our your boy on YouTube...
Talk to you later,
Alison

Alison - actually we had not planned to compete for some other obligations. Then my trainer, Sterling Graburn's horse was lame and off training for long enough to cause Sterling to decide not to take him. He asked to take my Saddlebred, Singsation. Sterling's horse was a Prelim but I've been competing my ASB in Intermediate. Sterling took him and won Intermediate Single Horse!! I went at last minute and took video of them in all three phases. Go to YouTube and search on: Singsation, Iron Horse.

Darryl - its such an amazing place! Its our first time there and we heard so many good things about it. The only thing that really bothered us was the drive around Chicago. We went a different way home, it was a little longer but it was a way better route. The next time we go we will be going that way! Did you show there as well?
Thanks Frances!
