FINALLY got in a ride today. Haven't ridden since Dec. 1st! Still snow pack on the road, so we took a nice easy stroll. Better than nothing, but I don't know how I'll get ready for the first ride May 1.
I'm in Western Ontario and I've been doing CTR off and on since the early 1980s despite having being born literally on the OCTRA circuit.
I've ridden under OCTRA, OAATS, UMECRA, GLDRA, AHA and ApDRA rules but never yet under NATRC.
My horse (Bask N Coins+/) with my mom riding was 2005 AHA National Champion CTR (top Partbred Arabian and top Overall). I was riding my mom's Purebred Arabian mare (MG Inkhredible Fire) and was 6th Purebred and 10th Overall at the same ride. The previous year I was riding my mare and was 7th Partbred at the 2004 AHA National Championship CTR.
I'd previously competed at the National level in 1982 at the AHA National Championship CTR but only made 22 miles before having to pull out with a Grade 3 lameness due to deep sand aggravating scar tissue.

Oh, thank you, Mary! Great suggestion--I'll do it. BJ

Hi BJ. I'm not from Washington, but the way I got started was to volunteer at a CTR. I worked the P&R (pulse & respiration), no prior training necessary. Met all kinds of great people (and their horses) and asked all kinds of questions. I entered three CTRs last year and exceeded all of my goals. Can't wait til next year! The rides I entered were through NATRC (North American Trail Ride Conference), although there are other organizations. Here is their website address if you are interested. www.natrc.org Dive in!!!

Hello, group. I'm interested in trying competitive trail. Is anyone in the group from Western Washington?

Only four months *sigh* until the first CTR of 2010
We must be at the opposite ends of the country! I am in eastern Ontario...I just competed in my first CTR training ride two weeks ago - of course it had rained all week and even rained harder the day of the CTR - so much of the trails were under a foot of water and what wasn't under water was knee deep in mud! My TB gelding, Dell, wasn't a fan of either mud or water prior to this ride but now he will go through pretty much anything! Figures, I have just bought a young Morab-Appy mare to train for trail riding and was going to find Dell another job that he would enjoy better but ever since the CTR , he has been going beautifully! Now I have a green trail horse sitting in the field and have ridden Dell in all the latest trails...now what do I do???
