Wow, first time I've ever watched the Derby. It was so exciting. I had picked #12, Mr Big Stuff to win, my spouse picked #3 and my son #12. We were amazed! Did anyone see "Mine that Bird" get sandwiched at the beginning, then make a direct bee line for the finish?

Never saw the race, but I hear that a the Winner was a long shot, Canadian underdog...Canada rocks...lol
I only got to bet on the Derby once, when I was down there for the weekend years ago...won a few bucks, but did not put enough down to really make a killing. Glad you enjoyed it Cathy.
He did have a Canadian connection? I thought I heard that but wasn't sure. He did go off at 50-1 but I never heard what the payout ended up being! The owner seemed pretty down to earth. Did he only get him $9500?? Great deal there!
For anyone who didn't catch the race, I have posted the video on site. You can link to it here:

It was FANTASTIC!!!
Oh. My. Stars!!! Now THAT'S a race!! I love it when the underdog wins!! Had tears in my eyes when I saw him come up along that rail and sail across the finish line, then more tears when they interviewed the jockey!! Thank you so much for posting that!

Ooooohhhh Caannnadaaaaa....!! LOL
Thanks Eileen, I think the odds were 50 to 1
It was very interesting; the trainer drove from Nevada to Kentucky to get the horse there; I looked at the horse and then went with the 3rd place winner -- something about Dancing and Generals Quarters....it was a great race -- the jockey did a masterful job --- guided the horse through some pretty small openings -- a gutsy jockey and horse ---- the horse was purchased for 9,500 dollars --- what a find! Sounds like this horse is just coming into his own --- of course as a 3 yr old his bones aren't totally developed yet; hope they don't race him too much! After his racing career he hopefully can have a 2nd career as a nice horse for a Junior or Adult Amateur!
I loved it when the trainer, Wholley from New Mexico , got to the winners circle close to Mine That Bird and his rider, Calvin Borel and then he just sort of threw his crutches away and dove for the horse and rider with a huge hug. You could just feel the joy between them.
I'm not pro horse racing but I did watch this race this year and it was great!
The adrenilin rush almost made me forget all the horses that are harmed by this sport.
I was very thankful there was no major incidents this year!
Y'know, that was my take on it as well. I loved the stretch run, my attention was already on that jockey, because when he won the Oaks on Fri, he was patting his DANDY filly on the neck as she drove for home...20 lengths ahead of the others. BUT...I couldn't stop thinking about Eight Belles...so didn't really take a proper breath untill all of the field was walking.....both races!
Yahoooooo for the Canadian $9500 whoopin' the butt of horses worth nearly 3 million !!!....whose yer daddy....er....gelding .. NOW !!!
Trained and raced at Woodbine in Ontario Caanada. Originally bought as a yearling for 9500$ at auction. Sold for 400.000 dollars after earning some signifigant money here in Ontario.
but did anybody see the very beginning of the race, right out of the gate, two horses squeezed up against the winner, one on each side? It was scary, glad to see it had a happy ending.
