I just have to share this!

A week after my highschool graduation earlier this summer, my doctor took bone out of my back in oder to releive pressure on my compressed nerves. After blowing that third disk in my back, I wasnt sure what would happen. But 6 weeks after my surgery, I went on a four day trail ride camping trip with a group of 11-15 year old girls. And WOW! Its the first time in months that I was able to ride my horse with little to no discomfort. My back side and knees were more sore than anything else! It made me wonder if trail riding was ultimately a good alternative to ring riding? Maybe the secret to feeling better is to just set you and your horse free of the ties an arena places on you?

Welcome Elizabeth! We need to get some discussions going on here again. Can you tell us about the disabilities your riders are dealing with?
How do you come up with solutions to their problems?

I have been a coach for Special Olympics for 15 years and lucky enough to have been blessed with horses for just as long. 6 years ago I started an equestrian program for our athletes and we continue to grow each year. Life is a beautiful gift, just wish the rain would lay off long enough for our muddy arenas to dry up a bit!

Hello everyone, newbie here.  Diagnosed with MS in 2003, got back into riding 2006 when I was given a retired racehorse "Slew O'Rhythm".  Best thing i ever.

Long cold winter finally comng to an end here so hoping to get into a more regular routine.   In the winter I go to the gym and take yoga classes.  I also have a Wii at home and like using Wii fit to keep up fitness, balance, coordination so that it doesn't take me as long to get back into riding.  Stable where I keep him has an indoor but not insulated, so once we hit the -20 mark (dec/jan/feb) kinda puts a damper on ridng.

i know when spring is here cuz also sheddng time!  Chapstick and sheddng horses just don't mix.

Cheers

Karen

Hey people, how are you all doing?  Getting any riding in?

I had an awful cold and as a result my MS symptoms are worse, especially my hands and coordination.  I love the riding horses, they tell me long before I notice that I am getting worse.  They are also more accurate that the neurologists and other doctors  This helps me, I have more time to come up with solutions that work!

I have been able to ride pretty regularly, so they also give me regular physical therapy.

Keep riding.  That's my motto!

The heat got to me today. I had to stop wearing my ice vest (days long muscle spasms on my back and chest) and rode today with just my cool cap. I was sweating, and my hands deteriorated. Now I have to change the pommel plate on my Wintec saddle so I can wear my cool vest (you soak it in water, wring it out, and wear it) without ruining my leather saddles.
Now I just have to find an extra wide Wintec saddle so I can do the same at the other stable. Luckily there the stable is near the top of a hill and there is some breeze. On that mare I have to use my leather dressage saddle, its the only one I have that does not just roll out of place on her back.
How is everyone else?
I need some inspiration.
